The payoff for the All Bet is 174 to 1. For this wager to win, then the shooter must roll all the following numbers before rolling a seven: 2,3,4,5,6,8,9,10,11, and 12. The house edge on the 174:1 payout on the All Bet is 7.76%. If the payout is 175 to 1, then the house edge is 7.47%. Craps Bet True Odds Payout Odds House Edge; Pass Line: 251 to 244: 1 to 1: 1.41%: Come: 251 to 244: 1 to 1: 1.41%: Don't Pass: 1031 to 949: 1 to 1: 1.36%: Don't Come (Bar 12) 1031 to 949: 1 to 1: 1.36%: Pass / Come Free Odds: 2 to 1 on 4 or 10 3 to 2 on 5 or 9 6 to 5 on 6 or 8: 2 to 1 on 4 or 10 3 to 2 on 5 or 9 6 to 5 on 6 or 8: 0%: Don't Pass / Don't Come Free Odds: 1 to 2 on 4 or 10. Here's a rundown of all the various bets in craps…

Winning craps odds are based on the frequency by which a number can be rolled. The more common the number, the lower the payout since the odds of rolling that number are higher. Rare numbers tend to payout higher. The craps payout chart below shows various payout statistics such as what kind of craps bets, true odds, payout odds and the total house edge after everything has been calculated through. Note that these payout odds in the chart listed below are not the same in every casino or on all craps tables.

(A) Pass Line

This is the basic bet that most players make, and it's actually one of the bestbets on the layout, with a house edge of only 1.41%. Ifyou want an easy game then you can simply stick to this bet and ignore all the otherbets. (Though to get the best chances of winning, you should really learn the Free Odds bet too.)

(B) Field Bet

This wager good for ANY single roll of the dice at ANY time. The player wins evenmoney if a 3, 4, 9, 10, or 11 is rolled. On most tables a 2 pays double and 12 paystriple. The player loses if a 5, 6, 7, or 8 is thrown. The house edge is a modest2.77% — there are better and worse bets.

(C) Come Bet

A 'virtual' Pass Line bet. It's just like the Pass Line but can be made at any time, almost ALWAYS in the middle of a round when a point has already been established.

(D) Place Bets:

The Place Bet is basically an 'on-demand Point'. The player is betting that thePlaced number will roll before a 7 rolls. This bet can be made at any time, butis usually made after a point number is already established. It's paid as follows:

Number bet onPaysExampleHouse Edge
4 or 109 to 5a $5 bet is paid $96.7%
5 or 97 to 5a $5 bet is paid $74%
6 or 87 to 6a $6 bet is paid $71.5%

A 'Buy' bet is the same as the place bet, only with a different payoff. When youBuy a point you pay a 5% commission and are paid true odds if the bet wins (2:1on the 4 and 10, 3:2 on the 5 and 9, and 6:5 on the 6 and 8). The house edge onBuy bets is 4.76%, making the Buy a better deal than thePlace bet on the 4 or 10, and a worse deal on any other numbers.

Some casinos take the 5% commission only on a win In such cases the houseedge for Buying the 4 or 10 is only 1.67%.

(E) Proposition Bets:

These bets can be made on any roll of the dice.

Any Craps – 2, 3, or 12Pays 8 for 1
Any SevenPays 5 for 1
ElevenPays 16 for 1*
Ace-DeucePays 16 for 1*
AcesPays 31 for 1*
TwelvePays 31 for 1*
These bets pay LESS on 'Strip' table layouts.
Downtown casinos pay better.

The house edge on prop bets ranges between 11.1% and 16.67%. If your folly requires you to make prop bets thenyou should at least find a table layout with Downtown odds in order to reduce theridiculous House advantage, though even then it's still throwing money away.

(F) Free Odds on the Pass Line:

After a point has been established, the player can increase a pass line bet by 'takingodds'. Free Odds bets are paid according to the TRUE ODDS of the dice, meaning thatthese bets carry NO HOUSE EDGE, which is why they're called'Free' Odds. This is the only bet in the casino where the odds aren't against you.For any given amount of money that you intend to bet on Craps, you want the highestpercentage possible on the Free Odds. Herein lies the reasonwhy you should shop for a casino that offers 5X, 10X, 20X or 100X table odds!

The Free Odds bet is placed behind the pass line or original 'Flat' bet. Each pointnumber pays different odds.

Craps Odds Chart

The PointPayoutExample
4 and 102 to 1a $5 wager is paid $10
5 and 93 to 2a $5 wager is paid $7*
6 and 86 to 5a $5 wager is paid $6
* Rounded DOWN from $7.50 on a Strip table layout. 'Downtown' layout might pay actualratio of a full $7.50. Strip table layouts do not handle 50-cent pieces.

We have a whole separate article dedicated to the Free Oddsbet.

(G) Free Odds on Come Bets:

Odds on come bets can be made exactly the same way as odds on pass line bets, exceptthat the player hands the Odds bet to the dealer who will place it on the numberrolled and on TOP of the original Flat bet. Just like the regular Odds bet, theOdds on the Come Bet also carries no house edge.

(H) Don't Pass Line:

This bet is the same as a pass line bet only in reverse. If the first roll is 7or 11, the player loses, 2 or 3 wins and 12 is a push or what is called a 'Bar'(neither wins or loses). Most people bet the Pass instead of the Don't Pass, soif you bet the Don't you may be viewed as an enemy by the other players. The houseedge is 1.36%.

Don't Come Bet:

Same as a Come bet only in reverse. Just as with the Don't Pass Line, dealer willplace bet behind the Don't Come number as it is rolled. If a 7 is rolled beforethe number the player wins. This player is betting with that a point number willNOT roll before a 7 does.

Hardways

These bets win if 4, 6, 8, or 10 are thrown in pairs as pictured on the table layout. They lose when the number rolls 'Easy' (not in pairs or as pictured on the tablelayout) OR if a 7 rolls first.

Number bet onPaysExampleHouse Edge
4 or 108 for 1a $5 bet wins $40, and you don't get your original bet back11.1%
6 or 810 for 1a $5 bet pays $50, and you don't get your original bet back9.09%

Let's face it, as much fun as it is going to the casino and playing craps, winning at the craps table is a heck of a lot more fun than losing.

To increase your chances of winning, and before you put your hard earned money down on the table, you should at least have a rudimentary knowledge of the odds, payouts and house edge for each of the bets on the table.

Before we get into the details, let's get a couple of things out of the way first.

  1. The casino always wins in the long run.
    • The casino's revenues are built on the statistical probabilities of the outcomes, payouts and house edge of each of the bets in the casino and at the craps tables over the long term. (24/7, 365 days a year).
    • BUT… We're only at the casino and at the craps table for a short period of time. (a day, weekend, week, etc.). You're better positioned to take advantage of short term trends at the table and… sometimes you just get lucky! Advanced craps players can sometimes even flip some of the odds into their favor.
  2. The casino's advantage extends beyond the house edge.
    • In addition to the house edge on each bet, the casino is banking on the fact that most players at the craps tables don't know how to play the game and don't know the smart vs. not so smart bets on the table.
    • SO… By doing what you are doing right now, learning how to play the game well and understanding the probabilities and house edge for each of the bets on the table, you're effectively reducing the casino advantage over you. Aside from becoming an advanced player, this is your best bet for leaving the tables and the casino, a winner.
  3. While you're at the tables, you'd might as well have some fun.
    • While most of my play is, and your play should be, centered around the smarter bets on the table, don't forget that you're there to have a good time. There is nothing wrong with throwing some dollars on the ‘not so smart' bets when you want to. I do it myself from time to time if the table is slow and I'm looking for a little more action or when I'm playing with house money. As long as you're making an informed decision… then go for it.

Now that we have that out of the way, let's get to work on getting you to be an informed gambler at the craps tables.

So that you better understand the tables below, I'm going to give you a basic explanation of how the odds and payouts determine the edge that the house has over you.

Don't worry, I wasn't very good at math either and you don't need to understand the formula above… I certainly don't. All you need is the table below… it's all figured out for you. If you're looking for a deeper explanation there are a lot of statistics and probability websites out there to research.

  • ODDS: This is the probability that an outcome will occur.
    • For example, if I were to flip a coin, the probability (or ODDs) that it would come up heads is 50% or 1 out of every 2 times the coin is flipped, IN THE LONG RUN. So if I flip the coin 1000 times, it will probably come very close to 500 heads and 500 tails. (This would be 1 to 1 ODDs)
    • That doesn't mean that IN THE SHORT TERM it will come out heads every other time it's flipped. You may get 2 heads in a row, 5 heads in a row, or maybe even 10 heads in a row, but IN THE LONG RUN you're most likely going to get close to the same number of heads and tails outcomes.
    • The SHORT TERM TRENDS are what we want to take advantage of to leave the table a winner.
  • PAYOUTS:The amount the casino pays you each time your outcome occurs.
    • Using the coin flip example above, imagine that you're betting $5 on heads each time the coin is flipped. At even (or 1 to 1) ODDs, you should get paid $5 every time it comes up heads. But that's not how it works at the casino. They have a built in ‘vig' that pays you less than the true odds.
    • So let's imagine that at this casino, they pay you $4 every time heads is flipped. In 10 flips, if it comes up heads 9 times… you've won $45.
    • But if you flip the coin 100 times and it comes out 50 heads and 50 tails, you just lost $100 even though you won an even amount of times.
    • (100 flips at $5 = $500) (50 wins (heads) paid $4 each = $400) = ($100 loss)
    • This is where the HOUSE EDGE comes in.
  • HOUSE EDGE:The percentage difference between the true odds of a winning outcome and the payout for that winning outcome.
    • This is how the casino always wins in the long term… by paying you less than the true probability of the outcome you bet on.
    • In the coin flip example, your betting $5 on an even odds bets, but they're only paying you $4 for every win. In this example, the house edge on this bet is a whopping 20%. (This would qualify as a ‘Not So Smart' bet.)

Your goal is to lessen the casino's house edge over you so you have the best chance of winning. Just focus most of your betting on the bets that have the lowest house edge.

SMART BETS

These are the bets with the lowest House Edge and give you the best chance of winning. An easy way to remember these… They are on the right and left sides of the table. Most of your betting should be focused on these bets.

NOT SO SMART BETS

These are the bets that give the casino the highest House Edge and their greatest advantage over you. Again, there is nothing wrong with betting on any of these as long as you're making an informed decision on what you're betting on.

Craps Odds Betting

These bets are typically located in the center of the table in front of the stickman.

You are now a much more educated gambler and much better equipped to win at the craps table and against the casino.
